OPTION 1 CLEOPATRA VII, ruler of Egypt and visionary of PALMOLIVE soap.
WHAT CAN THE IMAGE INCLUDING THE TEXT TELL US ABOUT CLEOPATRAS REPUTATIONS?
To begin I have used the OU (Open University) Arts and Humanities course book chapter 1 as my background reading.
The image in the Palmolive advert depicts the Queen of Egypt luxuriously reclining upon a chaise lounge type of bed with a vulture headdress which signified she was a Queen and with an Isis (Gk) Aset Shemsu (Egyptian) accessory provocatively suspended between her revealing breast cups showing off plenty of skin. Her hand held up nonchalantly as if conducting a magic spell as palm and olive oil is mixed into a bowl in an alter by servants and a plume of smoke wafts into the air with Palmolive soap bars being created.
The sheer dress with a large gold belt suggests a style of dress has been created in the artists imagination ignited by not only Cleopatra’s reputation but influenced by a Hollywood film released in 1917 as the dress code of Cleopatra turned provocatively into a more daring 20th century image more seductive than the hieroglyphic images of the Egyptian Queen’s portrayal such as the more conservative dresses of Isis, Hathor, and other Queens of Ancient Egypt from the BC era. Cleopatras lounging pose represents a Romanesque decadence and a life of luxury as the Elite of Rome reclined even when eating while the Greeks and Egyptians are portrayed standing in general. So, the image is circa 1917 and in the writing below the ad creator prints a headline that it is Cleopatras vision of creating a fragrant, creamy soap bar and as it is a vision, she is using her imagination to merge the oils to create her desire all very provocative but we the audience already know that Palmolive has been created and underneath are the prices of this product.
Historically the Roman view on Cleopatras reputation was that she was a wanton woman who had successfully seduced, or as Cleopatra was indeed Isis reincarnated put under her spell Isis being the goddess of magic, the 2 most important men in Rome, Mark Antony and Julius Caesar but was not 3rd time lucky with Octavian Augustus Caesar who would be her nemesis and would make Cleopatra the last Pharaoh of Egypt in part due to her exuberant lifestyle and dubious activities with Mark Antony. Egypt and thus its ruler Cleopatra by association were seen by Rome as a den of sin. The reputation of Cleopatra was initially enhanced when she became a heavyweight power broker in Roman politics ensuring an alliance with Rome by consecutively taking two lovers one of them an enemy of the first Roman Emperor Octavian who was to eventually make adultery an offence carrying the death sentence, so high were his standards set.
So, to contrast and compare the Roman view of Cleopatra as basically a corrupt hussy it is interesting to see her through the eyes of the Arabic world where a completely opposed picture of her reputation appeared. More virtuous scholar than manipulative tempter, more a noble ruler, patron of the arts, philosopher and scientist as befits the goddess Isis who was also Sophia the goddess of wisdom and here, I will refer to the Cleopatra of modern culture so sensationalized by Hollywood as ‘sex sells’ rather than perhaps a truer portrayal of Cleopatra spending many hours poring over scholarly texts. More importantly this contrast lends credence to the overall myth and reputations that surround such a fascinating woman etched so firmly in the minds of the public.

OPTION 2 MARY, the mother of Jesus.
WHAT DOES THE TEXT TELL US OF MARY’S REPUTATION’S?
To begin I quote from the OU course book Arts and Humanities book Page 50 1.1.
Mary has been described as ‘more of an inspiration to more people than any other woman who ever lived’ (Pelikan, 1996, P 2), inspiring worship, pilgrimage, love and a vast range of art and music across the world. Mary lived some 2000 years ago and as there are now some 3.5 billion women on the planet today so to hold this position is no mean feat and I pay homage to her as I think it proves that her reputations are predominantly of great benefit to her memory as we will see that as late after her death and ascension to heaven as 1996 the mere image of her on a window in clearwater, Florida was enough to bring millions of Mariam devotees to the shrine for, I presume, worship of the so called divine intervention of this miracle. I believe the main reasons why this outpouring of human emotion occurred are the following.
1) In 1854 Pope Pius IX proclaimed the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception according to which the Blessed Virgin (not Jesus) was born without original sin. (The Popes, John Julius Norwich Page 402) The Pope is Jesus’s vicar on earth.
2) Role as virgin mother to Jesus the most popular, worshipped, and influential man in history.
3) Through the devotion and prayers to Mary the faithful see her as a perfect mother, assessor between human beings and God.
4) Chosen by God for the miracle of an immaculate conception and virgin birth of his son.
5) A female saint who by the 3rd century AD was presented as a revered figure who holds superior knowledge of the Christian faith and of cosmic mysteries and has special powers to mediate with her son on behalf of sinners. (Shoemaker 2016).
6) Divine mother adopted as a female figure in a male orientated church presenting a vital psychological supplement to the faith.
7) Pope Pius IX, Apostolic Constitution Ineffabilis Deus; (Denz. 1641) So not only was the Blessed Virgin Mary born a Saint “full of grace” (Lk 1.28) She was conceived one too. Therefore, she has always been a Saint, even from the very first moment of her existence. Mary is the most admirable of all the Saints in Christianity.
8) When Mary’s earthly life ended God raised her body directly into heaven, known as the assumption of Mary.
It was not only Christianity that promoted the devotion of Mary but in the Qur’an, she holds an even greater portrayal of a more perfect persona than can be found in the bible. In Islam Mary holds the highest position of all woman in humankind's history. This woman is in a league of her own.
One thing that springs to mind as to the sheer volume of pilgrims visiting the clearwater stain was the rarity of such an occurrence but one that is not entirely uncomfortable to a religious devotee as the image of the Blessed Mary can be found on stained glass windows throughout Christianity allowing people to be comfortable with its presence as opposed to an apparition of Mary on a slice of toast as Mary stars on Church, Cathedrals and Abbey windows.
Another point to be made is the automatic assimilation of making clearwater a shrine at a festival as a rosary factory appeared at the scene as did a crucifix thus making the window a focal point for Marian devotion.
